Personal Support Worker Certificate

As a Personal Support Worker (PSW), you provide daily care to individuals who need assistance as they deal with the effects of aging, injury, or illness. You work alongside and under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse. As you compassionately care for and assist patients with personal hygiene, meal preparation, household management and in dealing with various ongoing conditions, you often develop close and rewarding relationships. As such, your knowledge and abilities must frequently go beyond dexterity as a PSW and encompass a deep understanding of your overall value to each client, as you perform your responsibilities and support with sensitivity and respect.

National Association of Career Colleges (NACC): The Personal Support Worker program in Brantford is approved by the Ministry of Long-Term Care Act

what to expect

The program focuses mainly on caring for elderly patients and as such, covers topics of abuse and safety, cognitive impairment, mental health issues, and personal hygiene. In addition, you will discover and practice the interpersonal skills that are invaluable to your new profession, as you care for and support your clients with dignity, kindness and respect.

To ensure you are trained in the various specialized areas you may pursue, you will also learn about childcare and assisting new mothers and newborns. In our PSW program, you have the distinct advantage of working within our fully equipped, simulated hospital room and practical nursery room. We have equipment ranging from wheelchairs and Hoyer lifts, to specialized hospital beds. You will have all the hands-on practice required to feel comfortable and confident when caring for patients of all ages and abilities.
