Developmental Service Worker Diploma

As a developmental service worker, you work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities and those who deal with mental illness to promote their health and wellbeing. You interview, assess, assist, and counsel clients and their families, facilitate life skills, encourage inclusive environments, and provide personal care. Anderson’s Developmental Service Worker program meets all Provincial Standardization guidelines and outcomes.

Upon graduation you will be able to pursue work in a number of areas including (but not limited to): family support, within community or residential agencies, community organizations, private sector opportunities, transitional services or as an educational assistant or program supervisor.

what to expect

This program is 49 weeks, including a 17-week practicum with on-the-job training, offsite with potential employers. Our Developmental Service Worker program provides the technical and practical training for individuals looking for a rewarding career working with children, youth and adults who have developmental disabilities. Students will learn to give clients support and offer encouragement while promoting their mental, emotional, and physical health. Curriculum will cover areas such as: developmental psychology, health and wellness, personal care, crisis prevention intervention, community building, counseling techniques and teaching strategies, family dynamics, record and report writing, and much more.

Registered Education Savings Plans (RESP)

Students who have been named a beneficiary under a family members’ Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), may use funds from the RESP to finance their education.

Lifelong Learning Plan

Canada-Ontario Job Grant

The Canada-Ontario Job Grant (C.O.J.G.) provides an opportunity for employers to invest in their workforce with help from the government.

The Job Grant provides direct financial support to individual employers who wish to purchase training for their employees. It’s available to small, medium, and large businesses with a plan to deliver short-term training to existing and new employees, and will:

  • Provide up to $10,000 in government support per person for training costs.
  • Require employers to contribute one-third of the total costs. There is additional flexibility for small businesses to provide an in-kind contribution towards their share of the costs.
  • Require training delivered by an eligible, third-party trainer.
